Meat Demand Trends

Self-sufficiency in the UK red meat sector has deteriorated considerably since the mid-1990s, but is falling self-sufficiency really compromising meat security? This is discussed in a special article featured in the December 2008 issue of Meat Demand Trends, a quarterly publication from Economics.

A strong domestic livestock and meat sector with a sound production base has a key role in ensuring food security, although so is the UK's ability to source suitable supplies from other countries. Red meat production has fallen due to a combination of changing agrciultural policy, low prices and the impact of crises such as BSE and FMD.

However, a decline in self-sufficiency does not necessarily lead to a fall in food security, especially if supplies of meat imports are reliable. There is both a common agricultural policy and a single market within the EU and other EU countrires are important suppliers of red meat to the UK.

Defra acknowledges that since 1995 declines in self-sufficiency in beef and pork have been substantial and so the ability of UK producers to meet market requirements has deteriorated. The decline in red meat self-sufficiency really started in 1996 with the BSE crisis in the beef sector. Not only has the UK red meat sector been increasingly unable to meet domestic market requirements, but also its export performance has deteriorated sharply. The trade deficit for red meat is now substantial.
